Professional Experience

ROANE COUNTY, Kingston, TN 1998 to 2014

Founded in 1801, Roane County is 361 square miles with 52,000+ residents and comprised of the Cities of Kingston

(County Seat), Harriman, Rockwood City, and Oak Ridge, and the Town of Oliver Springs.

                                                          COUNTY ATTORNEY

Elected as County Attorney (reelected three times) and served as sole legal counsel for the county, representing all elected officials in every aspect of their duties, including litigation before Federal and State courts.

  • Legal Oversight: Provided advisement and legal counsel to the County Executive, County Commission, Sheriff, General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judges, and all other county officials. Managed approximately $100M annual budget for 2,000 employees.
  • Government: Functioned as Parliamentarian during County Commission meetings, supplying legal advice on matters before the Commission. Successfully litigated and won every suit tried against the county for monetary damages.
  • Contracts: Provided expertise and litigated cases regarding contracts valued at $100K+. Advised and represented officials on all contracts entered into by the county.

PRIVATE PRACTICE, Kingston, TN 1990 to Present


Represented corporations, families, and individuals in a wide range of legal matters.

  • Litigation & Appeals: Argued numerous cases against large firms, insurance companies, and governmental entities. Drafted pleadings, prepared and argued motions, and conducted depositions for discovery, which included expert witnesses. Prepared appellate briefs, responses, motions, and pleadings for Tennessee Court of Appeals.  Handled more than 14 cases in the Tennessee Court of Appeals and Supreme Court with several reported cases.

  • Mediation: Gained extensive experience mediating cases involving substantial sums of money and assets.

  • Corporate Law: Created corporations, LLCs, and partnerships and represented companies in litigation.  Clients’ issues involved business formation and dissolution and ownership rights of shareholders. Prepared articles of incorporation, bylaws, and all documents related to Tennessee corporations.

  • Employment Law: Handled all employment issues, including several cases before the EEOC and Tennessee Human Rights Commission regarding workplace discrimination.

  • Probate: Drafted hundreds of wills and deeds. Handled will contests and cases related to conservatorships and powers of attorney. Litigated all issues related to the probate process.

  • Family Law: Handled thousands of cases in Circuit, Chancery, General Sessions, and Juvenile Courts.  Litigated all issues relating to divorce, custody, alimony, and property division. Represented clients in domestic cases before the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Served as member of Child Abuse Review Team affiliated with the Department of Children Services (created to aid and protect abused children).

  • Criminal Law: Leveraged previous experience as Assistant Public Defender in managing thousands of criminal cases in General Sessions and Criminal Courts of Roane, Loudon, Morgan, and Meigs Counties. Cases ranged from misdemeanors to serious felony cases. Tried criminal cases before juries.

  • Personal Injury: Successfully represented plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury cases covering automobile injury cases, slip and fall cases, and cases related to owners and occupiers of land.

  • Ethics: Taught several CLE classes for attorneys, ranging from Ethics to Ouster Law.
